Rodent control is important from a food safety perspective, especially on organic farms. However, extermination using cats and poison has their disadvantages.
According to the studies homemade mouse traps might be an alternative to use of poison on organic farms. It is advantageous for welfare of non-target animals and causes less environmental pollution.
In contrast, the development of animal welfare for the trapped rodent compared to poisoning is doubtful and its costs more efforts for farmers to manage traps.
In addition traps are more expensive on the short-range (cost effectiveness). Farmers have to come to a decision which aspects they consider as imperative and should apply a rodent control technique that is best in line with their way of life.
